This is the land of Shakespeare’s Birnam Wood, of forests and jade-green woodland. Scale mountain peaks such as Ben Lawers or Schiehallion and keep an eye out for soaring ospreys, majestic stags and other stunning bird and wildlife species.
Perthshire is, of course, home to the city of Perth on the banks of the River Tay. It’s the newest city in Scotland and has a real buzz about it – this is a city that punches well above its weight.
There are superb outdoor activities in this part of the world, from shooting and fishing at Gleneagles to mountain biking the Gaick Pass to cycling around Glen Lyon and Loch Tay. Love golf? Try teeing off somewhere like the Craigie Hill Golf Club, or the Landsdowne Golf Course. For something a little more sedate, we’d suggest checking out the Blair Athol Distillery.
Pitlochry is Highland Scotland’s biggest town, and a place of rich history, gorgeous food, endless breathing space and lots to see and do. It’s been a traveller’s hotspot since Queen Victoria came here.
With spectacular scenery everywhere you look, it’s an ideal base – just 75 minutes north of Edinburgh and with St Andrews only an hour and half to the south-east. Loch Ness is also accessible, and Perth has been the site of the Highland Games since 1852!
So what are you waiting for? The fairest portion of the northern kingdom is closer than you think.
