Nairn is a charming seaside resort, 16 miles east of Inverness, on the banks of the River Nairn. With a mild climate and surrounded by gently rolling countryside, there are lovely walks, many following the river. It used to be a busy herring fishing port and has a harbour in the quaint old part of town from which you can take dolphin and seal watching boat trips. Enjoy Nairn’s long sandy beach. Play golf on one of the 2 championship courses. Go fishing in the river and nearby lochs. Attend the highland games or agricultural show, an exhibition, music festival or theatre production.
While in the area don’t miss the conservation village of Cawdor, 5 miles to the south west, and the famous Cawdor Castle. Explore the castle’s fascinating rooms, wander through its beautiful gardens or follow the glorious, meandering, woodland walk. Browse in the gift shop and then enjoy a delicious restaurant meal.
7 miles east of Nairn you will find the village of Brodie and its 16th century castle. Owned by the National Trust for Scotland, the house and surrounding parkland are open to visitors. Make sure you also stop at the large retail outlet on the outskirts of the village that specialises in quality Scottish clothes, giftware and food.
Other interesting attractions close by are Fort George (Europe’s best preserved 18th-century military fortification), mediaeval Pluscarden Abbey, bronze age Clava Cairns, Dulsie Bridge (an 18th century military road bridge) and the 17th century Ardclach Bell Tower.
