Cycling Accommodation in the Highlands

cycle_scotland1With truly breathtaking scenery, quiet roads, beautiful forest tracks and some of the world’s best mountain biking, the vast area of the Scottish Highlands is ideal for a cycling holiday.  Whether you’re looking for leisurely forest or coastal tracks for the whole family to enjoy or challenging mountain bike trails, there are wonderful cycle routes waiting for you in the Highlands.

Cycle Friendly Self Catering in the Scottish Highlands

What better way to experience Scotland’s jaw-dropping scenery than by biking through it?  The Scottish Highlands has everything you could want from a cycling destination – world class mountain biking, gorgeous forests, a snaking stretch of coastline and relatively empty roads that wind through spectacular landscapes.

National Cycle Routes

National Cycle Routes take you along quiet country paths and minor roads, following traffic-free paths as much as possible.  Route 1 of the National Cycle Network takes you into the Highlands from the east coast, joining Aberdeen to John O’Groats.  From Inverness the route leads north via the Black Isle on a journey through the heart of the North Highlands (from Tain to Bonar Bridge, onto Lairg and up to Thurso, before meandering along the coast to John O’Groats).   Route 7 covers the stretch that reaches south of Inverness to Aviemore and along the edge of the Cairngorms National Park (the route then continues down to Glasgow).  Whether you simply enjoy a leisurely afternoon family cycle on part of a route near your holiday cottage or link longer sections together for some serious cycling, both routes promise a backdrop of stunning scenery.

Mountain Biking

With its rugged, mountainous landscapes it’s no surprise that the Highlands attracts keen mountain bikers.  Host of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, the Nevis Range Mountain Experience in Fort William is the spiritual home of mountain biking in the Highlands, with demanding downhill courses and challenging cross country trails for experienced mountain bikers, and the slower pace of forest tracks for beginners.

The Quiraing loop on the Isle of Skye was voted as one of the best mountain biking trails in the country, and with its truly magnificent surroundings, there are plenty of circuits and trails on Skye waiting to take your breath away.

There are, of course, a host of different places to enjoy mountain biking in the Highlands.  Forestry Commission Scotland has Trail Centres in various locations across the Highlands where you can hire bikes and find out more about the trails on offer.

mountain biking in scotlandForestry Commission Trail Centres:

Laggan Wolftrax, near Aviemore

These trails snake for over twenty miles through Laggan Forest, on the edge of the Cairngorm National Park.

Learnie Red Rock Trails, near Inverness

In the beautiful Black Isle, the ten miles of trails range from family tracks to demanding runs.

Witch’s Trails, Fort William

The Witch’s Trails lie in the shadow of Scotland’s highest mountains and include sections from the World Cup and World Championship trails.

Balblair, North Highlands

Soak up everything from forest scenes to sweeping views over the Kyle of Sutherland.

Cycle Friendly Self Catering

cyclist_welcome_smallA self-catering holiday cottage in the Highlands is a great choice for cyclists with everything you need to make the most of your holiday,  from washing facilities to plenty of storage space. All of our holiday accommodation suitable for cyclists have the Welcome Cyclist badge on the property details page.

Whether you simple spend a few days enjoying flat forest tracks or head out to explore technical mountain and forest trails, cycling in the Highlands is an ideal way to experience the peacefulness and raw beauty of this magical landscape.
